Holy Smokes! It has been a hell of a last few weeks and I am now only able to stop and catch my breath…as well as write an update for our Terralon game that was last played on 082113.
As you recall, previously, we just cleared out a pyramid of which there were two within an extra-planar area found within the basement (cuz there is always a basement) level of Rumpelstiltskin’s childhood home that was being inhabited by one of his witch sisters and her hoard of minotaur lackey’s. After their defeat Rumpelstiltskin gave us a pick of any item we wanted held within the family treasure vault.
Turns out the witch/sister was unable to gain entry into the vault and the treasures within we unspoiled. After selecting our compensation for doing Rumpel a solid, we asked him about some writings we found amongst his sisters abandoned possessions. The writings mentioned something about the Fifth Spire of Terralon and accessing it through what the writings appeared to say a door to a fairy circle. This was gibberish to us. He said that he might know something about them and to follow him. We did so, into his father’s study, where a truly odd spectacle beheld our eyes. Every sort of door imaginable lay within this place. There were dozens and scores and probably more, lining the walls.
Near as he could make out there was one such a door that when it’s threshold was crossed took you to a fairy circle. Now, we had no idea if this was the correct fairy circle but what other choice did we have?
As we passed through the door we well and truly found ourselves in a meadow near a couple of portal-ish looking things with web all over them. This was certainly not what we expected, but what the heck, we were here and so were these web covered portals. We went over to investigate, what could be the worst thing that could happen…?
It wasn’t the worst thing that could have happened or has happened but definitely something we should have expected. As soon as our monk, Addrick, stepped within 10 feet of the nearest portal he was set upon by spider swarms. Swarms!? Really!!? Let me point out that swarms take half damage from everything except burst and blast effects….which means that we were fighting at half strength.
And with that the words ” Addrick, this is another fine mess you have gotten us into” said with the voice of our beloved Mr. Burns from The Simpsons, come to mind. At this point we all engage in our various ways of engaging.
Alvo headed over to the other portal whereby he also triggers spider swarms. Anybody have a giant can of RAID handy? And now we split the party into two groups to battle both groups of spider swarms. As we do this and throughout the fight we manage to creep closer and closer to one another roughly in the middle of both spider portals so that healing and other benefits could be obtained easily enough without opening us up to mass effects from all groups of spiders.
The combat actually was not terrible and after a while managed to turn off the spawning effect both portals had going. Once that was taken care of we could see about using them to gain entry to the fifth portal, if we had the correct fairy circle. This certainly was not like any fairy circle we had used before, but then again, our experience was limited to only one time previous.
After some mucking about we managed to use the portals to gain entry into what we think is a spire and with any luck it is our spire.
Finally we find ourselves at the bottom of a large stairwell leading to who knows-where, so we decide to follow it and what whatever lay ahead. Turns out what lay ahead was dryders…among other things. I guess that makes sense since we dealt with spider swarms earlier.
Alar our elven ranger was first up the stairs into the waiting arms and legs of one dryder. Before he knew what hit him he was bloodied. Soon the rest of us joined the battle and much hacking ensued.
As we were getting the upper hand on what turned out to be 2 dryders and went in for the kill farther back in the room at the top of the stairs, a gigantic trapdoor spider flung the floor upwards and backwards carrying the dryder Vythrik was pursuing effectively replacing it and negating my attack. Fun!
Now with more pressing creatures to engage with the Defenders of Terralon rallied and took the fight to what turned out to be 2 gigantic spiders.
Something I forgot to mention was that there was also a sorcerer (arcane magic wielder) in the rear of the room that we were also having to contend with but not before dealing with his eight legged companions.
As the fight raged on and as we slowly eliminated the 2 gigantic spiders, from their corpses rose 2 even more grotesque and fearsome spider-things. Cripes!
Again and again we were beaten upon and again and again we rallied to eventually win the day. As we finally slay the gigantic spider things for the final time and deal with the sorcerer, who of all beings should appear to us than Terralon herself?
Terralon tells us that she is proud of the work we have been doing but not to get overconfident as we have yet to face the witches since our initial meeting. She also says that the spires are neither good nor evil and that is why the witches were able to align the spires toward their horrible inclinations.
Recap ~ In no particular order; 1) We need to deal with the witches once and for all so that they cannot realign the spires among other things. 2) We need to rescue the rightful heirs (brother and sister) to the throne of Terralon. 3) Deal with the traitor Grand Vizier who is at in part responsible for the king’s death and the abduction of the rightful heirs. 4) Be kind – rewind!
More to come…
